A brief description of the department:
Classics, with 8 full-time faculty, is housed in a large language department. With a small number of majors and MA students, we pride ourselves on the individual attention we give to our students. Our MA program is newly revived and thriving; it has a long history of serving late comers to Classics and non-traditional students who need further language training. We also offer courses in Modern Greek language and culture.
Particular strengths or unique areas of interest for the department: language preparation, ancient history, ancient theatre, papyrology, classical tradition
Application deadline: For Fall, July. 1; for Winter, Nov. 1
Unusual features of the application: Students should fill out an online application, and arrange for transcripts to be sent directly to the Graduate School. All other applications materials should come directly to the department, not the Graduate School. See details at: http://www.clas.wayne.edu/unit-inner.asp?UnitID=97&WebPageID=1755&site=candle
GRE scores required: Yes
Writing sample required: A writing sample is required. We prefer a paper of 10-15 pages.
For “best consideration for admission”, applicants should have (note that there are always special cases, and that meeting the stated numerical goals will not guarantee admission to any program):
We expect students to be at an advanced level in at least one ancient language, have a minimum GPA of 3.2, and a GRE verbal score above 600. We look, however, at all of a student’s qualifications, and sometimes accept a student conditionally. We prefer to meet students in person before accepting them.
Average number of new graduate students per year: 3
Approximate percentage of applicants this represents: 50%
Number of new students entering program this fall: 2
Approximate percentage of incoming students given full funding: 50-75%
Number of guaranteed years of funding: There is no guaranteed funding, but we do our best to provide some funding to all MA students. Many second/third year students are fully funded.
Out of those years, number student will be expected or required to serve as TA, RA, or the like: We ask students to teach as part-time (adjunct) faculty but we do not require it. Most graduate students teach Word Origins or another general education courses.
International students eligibility for financial aid: The same funding is available to international students.
