A brief description of the department:
FSU Classics is the oldest Classics department in Florida. We have a large graduate program (45 students) with a fairly new doctoral component. In addition we train Latin teachers and prepare students for careers in Museum Studies. Our faculty has widespread interests in all aspects of Classical Antiquity.
Particular strengths or unique areas of interest for the department: Ancient History/Historiography, Classical Archaeology, Greek and Latin poetry, Roman Empire, Ancient Religion

For programs leading to the MA:
A BA degree,
A 3.0 undergraduate grade point average (GPA) in all upper-division work and a minimum of GRE 1100,
Sufficient undergraduate work in classics to warrant study on the graduate level.
For the doctoral program:
An MA degree,
1200 on the GRE (600 verbal),
A 3.5 GPA in previous graduate level course work.
Students with a BA entering the doctoral program:
A 3.6 GPA overall and 3.8 GPA in upper division course work,
1300 on the GRE (650 verbal),
Normally two years each of college-level Greek and Latin with average grades of at least A-,
Well-developed writing abilities.
Approximate percentage of incoming students given full funding: 80%
Number of guaranteed years of funding: MA – 2 years, PhD – 5 years (3 years if entering with MA)
Out of those years, number student will be expected or required to serve as TA, RA, or the like: First year as a grader, thereafter as a TA.

Our increasing emphasis on the doctoral program is leading to new avenues of research and teaching in our department while maintaining our traditional MA programs.
